Press release for immediate release

The Local Business Charity Awards (N.Yorkshire) sponsored by Jelf launches for the first time in the county

The Local Business Charity Awards, created to recognise the support given by local businesses to local charities have launched in Harrogate today.
The awards are sponsored by insurance broker Jelf who have offices in Harrogate, Skipton, Malton, and York.
To enter, North Yorkshire charities are invited to nominate one of their local corporate supporters via an online form which will then be considered by the panel of judges.

Judges for the N.Yorkshire awards are:
  • Mr David Kerfoot MBD DL – Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire
  • Andrew Jones MP – Member of Parliament for Harrogate and Knaresborough
  • Tim Mortimer - Regional Director, Jelf
  • Dr Ruth Smith - Main Board Member of York, North Yorkshire & East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership
  • Carolyn Frank – North Yorkshire Development Manager for the Federation of Small Businesses

There are three awards to enter. The two main awards, which carry a £1,000 prize for the charity, are divided into income groups, allowing smaller charities who do not have experience of entering awards to have an equal chance of winning.

To qualify for entry, nominating charities must be purely local charities, not local branches of national charities, they must have their head office in N.Yorkshire and do at least 80% of their work in the county for the benefit of the county’s residents.  Charities must provide their charity number and proof of income with their nomination. Full terms and conditions of entry, including guidance on judging criteria, can be found on the website www.localbusinesscharityawards.co.uk/nyorks

The awards to enter are:
  • The Jelf Award – In which local N.Yorks charities with an annual income of over £200,000 will nominate their best N.Yorks corporate supporter.
  • The Harrogate Award – In which local N.Yorks charities with an annual income of under £200,000 will nominate their best N.Yorks corporate supporter.
  • The Individual Award – open to all N.Yorks charities to nominate a person from a local business, who regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty to support the charity and in doing so makes a significant difference to the lives of others. The winner of the Individual Award will win a £300 weekend away.

The relevant dates for the awards are:
  • Open for entries: 17 September 2018
  • Closed for entries: Friday 23 November 2018
  • Finalists announced: Wed 9 January 2019
  • Finals event: Wed 30 January 2019

All finalist businesses and charities will be invited as guests of sponsors Jelf, to attend the finals dinner which will be held at St Wilfrid’s Church, Duchy Road, Harrogate. Food served will be ‘The Best of N.Yorks’ consisting of food grown, sewn, harvested and reared in the area provided by local suppliers.

Tim Mortimer, director at Jelf said,

‘As a company Jelf have been sponsoring the Local Business Charity Awards in the South of England since 2014 and we are delighted they have now made their way up to us in North Yorkshire.  As a company our roots are firmly based in our local regions and we are really looking forward to shining the light on businesses and charities doing great work in our area, often with very little thanks and praise.’

The Local Business Charity Awards also runs ‘Support A Local Charity’.  Taking inspiration from internet dating, it asks businesses and charities to list themselves as ‘needing help’ and ‘willing to help’, for free, on their website. The scheme which was launched in July 2018 has already made two valuable matches that have generated over £4,000 worth of donated time, skills and goods to local charities from local businesses. N.Yorks companies and charities are encouraged to sign up here: https://www.localbusinesscharityawards.co.uk/support-a-local-charity-in-nyorks.html
The awards are now open for entries; entries close on Friday 23 November 2018.
