2018 Winner's Release (Glos)
7 September 2018
Winners announced in the 2018 Local Business Charity Awards (Gloucestershire)
Following an event held at the National Star last night (6th Sept), the winners of the 2018 Local Business Charity Awards (Gloucestershire), sponsored by insurance broker Jelf and insurer Ageas, have been announced.
The event, attended by over 90 people, was hosted for the first time by Heart FM Swindon presenter, Ben Atkinson.
The theme for the night was ‘The Best of Gloucestershire’, with staff from the National Star Bistro only serving food sewn, grown, harvested and reared in the county, including hand-reared organic pork, Bibury Trout, Stinking Bishop cheese and homemade breads using local flour.
The winner of the Jelf award, open to entries from charities with an annual turnover of more than £200,000 a year, was Randall and Payne, nominated by the Pied Piper Appeal.
The company was nominated for their incredible support of the charity including raising just under £14,000 towards a local playground project.
Naming them as winners, Nichola Thomson, Managing Director, South West & Midlands at Jelf, thanked them for their wholehearted and all-encompassing support of the Pied Piper Appeal and the parents and children of Belmont school, who benefitted from the new equipment.
She also announced that staff from Jelf’s Cheltenham office would be adopting the Pied Piper Appeal as their charity of the year for the next 12 months.
The winners of the Ageas award, open to entries from charities with an annual turnover of less than £200,000 a year, were Dee & Griffin Solicitors, nominated by Longlevens Rugby Football Club for their support in putting together the first mixed ability rugby team in Gloucestershire.
They received their award from Antony Greensweig, Claims Technical Exellence and Support Consultant at sponsor Ageas and co ordinator of their local charity committee, who remarked that their commitment and support of the Club and the benefits to the children and adults now playing the game was incontrovertible and would make an enormous difference to the lives of many in the future.
Longlevens RFC and the Pied Piper Appeal both receive a £1,000 donation from the sponsors.
The winner of the Individual award, announced by Dame Janet Trotter, Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire and a judge of the awards since their launch in 2014, was Elaine Hodgin, Sales and Marketing Manager at Clarkson Evans. Elaine, whose prize was a £300 voucher for a weekend away, was nominated by the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity, for being a driving force behind the company’s charity of the year support and for making a significant difference to the lives of local cancer patients.
Commenting on all the winners, Antony Greensweig from sponsor Ageas, said,
‘It never ceases to amaze us how so many kind-hearted businesses in Gloucestershire make such significant contributions, on a company and an individual basis, to support our local charities. It’s not easy as a local employer to choose just one winner, so we would like to thank all the 2018 entrants for their efforts and encourage them to continue their good work.’
Nichola Thomson, Managing Director, South West & Midlands at Jelf said,
‘This year, partly due to the new ‘Support A Local Charity’ campaign, where we match businesses and charities together, we’ve had more entries than ever before and many new charities entering for the first time, which was great to see. The standard was extremely high across the board and in reality, all those who made it to the finals were only a few points away from winning and so the end results were very close. To everyone who participated this year, we say ‘congratulations’, you are doing an outstanding job, we salute you, for you are what makes Gloucestershire a great county to live and work in. Thank you.’
The judges for the 2018 awards were:
The awards which are expanding across their UK, recently held the finals of their first Oxfordshire awards and will soon be launching in North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland, under the continued and generous sponsorship of insurance brokers, Jelf.
Although nominations for the awards are now closed, charities and businesses may continue to list themselves on the free ‘Support A Local Charity’ page, which aims to match businesses and charities in Gloucestershire in a skills and needs swap. https://www.localbusinesscharityawards.co.uk/support-a-local-charity-gloucestershire.html
